Romanian literature is being read in
Poland. Famous for its translations from world literature, Literatura na świecie dedicates its latest double number (5-6) to excerpts from the work of Romanian writers. The collection of writing in translation includes Gheorghe Crăciun (Pupa russa / Russian Doll), Mircea Cărtărescu (Orbitor. Aripa Stângă / Dazzling: Left Wing), Petru Cimpoeşu (Simion liftinicul. Europe!), Mihail Sebastian (Deschiderea stagiunii/Kcking Off the Season), Dan Lungu (Raiul găinilor. Fals roman de zvonuri şi mister / Hen Heaven: A False Novel of Rumors and Mystery as well as Sunt o babă comunistă / Baba Comunista), Alina Nelega (Amalia respiră adânc / Amalia Breathes Deeply), Andrei Pleşu (Despre îngeri / About Angels), Horia-Roman Patapievici (“Vulgata bunului român” / “The Good Romanian’s Vulgate,” from Cerul văzut prin lentilă / The Sky Seen Through a Lens), Dan C. Mihăilescu (Dulcile chingi ale libertăţii/ The Sweet Bonds of Liberty).The magazine numbers over 400 pages and includes bio-bibliographic information. The translators include Kazimierz Jurczak (famous for his promotion of Romanian culture in
Poland), OTP translator Joanna Kornaś-Warwas (known for her Polish translations of Mircea Cărtărescu’s De ce iubim femeile / Why we Love Women and Travesti / Travesties), Szymon Wcislo, Jerzy Kotliński and Ireneusz Kania. Of note: the dialogue between Gabriela Gavril andi Kazimierz Jurczak as well as OTP translator Szymon Wcislo’s interview with Filip Florian.
Lampa, No.8 (53), August 2008
With financial assistance from the Romanian Cultural Institute, another Polish magazine, Lampa, dedicates its August 2008 issue to Romanian literature. The names in theses pages are mainly representative of new Romanian literature.: Răzvan Ţupa, Daniela Raţiu, Ion Manolescu, Claudiu Komartin, T.O. Bobe, Ştefania Mihalache, Ioana Nicolaie, Octavian Soviany, Florina Ilis, Ioan Es. Pop, Elena Vlădăreanu, Răzvan Rădulescu, Ştefan Baştovoi, Miruna Vlada, Lucian Dan Teodorovici, Simona Popescu, Ioan T. Morar, Ovidiu Nimigean, Horia Ursu, Daniel Vighi şi Radu Paraschivescu. It should be noted that Lampa includes not only fiction but poetry and interviews. Ovidiu Şimonca’s interview with Florina Ilis, for example (reproduced from No. 430/2008 in Observator Cultural) or the interview with Răzvan Ţupa by Cosmin Dragomir.
